Mascot madness!

Due to the recent unveiling of the London 2012 mascots Wenlock and Mandeville, we've gone 'mascot mad' in the office! We came across a great book, Idle Idol, a collection of more than 100 mascots from all over the world. Worth a look we think! //Link

Lotus Racing

Wow! What a few months that's been and now, finally, we can talk about it. Tonight saw the very proud launch of our winter's work. The new Lotus Racing F1 car was unveiled this evening at the Royal Horticultural Halls in London. The livery... the driver's suits... the team wear... it all had to be done. We started from scratch, respected the brand and heritage we were working with and set to work. More details to follow soon.

Award win!

Okay, Christmas is still a little way off but the corks have already started to pop here at Burnt! Not too long ago we were commissioned to overhaul the brand and website for one of our clients, Catermasters, and we are thrilled to say the site has just scooped top honours in the 'food service' category at the prestigious Caterersearch.com Web Awards 2009.
The judging panel described the website as: 'fresh, interesting, fun and personable' and said it scored very highly on visual design and interactivity. We're mightily proud of the work we do for our clients but when it helps a client to scoop an important industry award, it's all the more satisfying.

Web trends map

I'm a big fan of information architecture, always have been. I like the presentation of data in an ordered and interesting fashion. We have created many corporate annual reports and always strive to present the key figures in new ways. Here iA have mapped the leading internet names onto the Tokyo Metro system. It's interesting to see the locations of various websites and their success and stability.ÿ// Link

Pencil Sculptures

Fantastic sculptures by Jennifer Maestre, originally inspired by sea urchins. "The spines of the urchin, so dangerous yet beautiful, serve as an explicit warning against contact. The alluring texture of the spines draws the touch in spite of the possible consequences. The tension unveiled, we feel push and pull, desire and repulsion. The sections of pencils present aspects of sharp and smooth for two very different textural and aesthetic experiences." // Link

Tour de France Chalkbot

Loving the Tour de France at the moment, waiting for the Alps to kick the GC race off but good to see the Brits going well. Interestingly the return of Lance Armstrong has allowed his Livestrong foundation to be creative with the traditional chalk names of the riders on the roads. They have developed the 'Chalkbot' - a machine which sprays messages onto the road. The messages are added via the Livestrong website and over 100,000 will be printed onto the roads of France over the next few weeks. // Link

Diamond Light Source

OK. So I spent Saturday at the Diamond Light Source Synchrotron facility, not far from the office, trying to get my head around what the synchrotron actually does! The basics go a little like this...
"Particles called electrons are generated in an electron gun, they are then accelerated up to very high speeds through a series of three particle accelerators. These are the linear accelerator, the booster synchrotron and the largeÿstorage ring. The storage ring uses magnets to steer the electrons around the ring. As the electron passes throughÿeach magnet it loses energy in the form of light. This light is then channelled out of the storage ring wall and into the experimental stations, called beamlines. The light is then used in a wide range of applications, from structural biology through fundamental physics and chemistry to cultural heritage."
Thankfully it was also an arts open day, exhibiting works by the community and the artists in residence, so I didn't feel quite so overwhelmed by the science!
